Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy

A more recent advance in laparoscopic surgery is the laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy.  This variation removes only a patient's uterus, leaving the cervix intact.  Because there is no vaginal incision, the uterus has to be removed abdominally. This requires the use of a morcellator that allows the surgeon to cut the uterus into small strips, making this operation much more complicated and time consuming than a regular hysterectomy, but by preserving this portion of the pelvic floor, the risk of vaginal prolapse should be reduced.

It has also been suggested that leaving the cervix intact may enhance the sensations experienced during sexual activity.  Other studies have indicated that cervix-saving procedures enabled women to resume intercourse much sooner.
